Betrayed by Christina Phillips

Betrayed

by Christina Phillips

What an adventurous story!  Not only was there action, but also secrets and drama, hot steamy sex, forbidden love, history, mythology.  Wow!

I really enjoyed the strength of Nimue and the passion she had with Tacitus.  I love when two characters fight hard to deny their feelings, especially when it goes against the grain of what "society" deems appropriate.  To hell with that!  =)  They have a powerful connection that isn't just physical either and that makes the story more romantic than just erotic...although it is very much that as well.

There's a lot more to this story than just two lovers and that makes it a powerful read.  The secrets they share along the way show the depth of character in both Nimue and Tacitus, as well as the commander.  Not everything is what it seems, but the reader isn't kept from knowing the truth.  There is a huge surprise nearing the end, and the commander turns from being an ogre to someone worthy of happiness.

I don't know much about this period in history, as I am a horrible student in that aspect.  But, when I read an amazing story, like Betrayed, it piques my interest to do research and learn more.  I wanted to learn more about the Romans, the Druids and the time period itself.

Ms. Phillips' writing is wonderful.  She keeps the reader on the edge of their seat and continually brings balance between honor and love.  The sex scenes are beautiful and HOT.  I look forward to reading more from Ms. Phillips!  I think she has a hit here and this should be a best seller.

In 51 A.D., Druid priestess Nimue is injured and enslaved by the hated Roman Legions. Even though she is drawn to her captor, she’s determined to escape and complete her mission for the Briton king and her duty to Arianrhod, the goddess she is bound to.

The tough Roman warrior who captures her is far from the brutal barbarian she expects. His touch inflames her desires and passion burns between them. Though Nimue does not accept her enslavement, her heart surrenders to her enemy. When Arianrhod appears to her in the form of an owl, Nimue knows the union is blessed.

Roman warrior Tacitus is enchanted by the fiery beauty who shows no fear and challenges him at every turn. Though enslaving her goes against his heart, he’s determined to make her his. No woman has ever heated his blood as she does. But when he discovers her true nature as one who actually communes with the gods, his loyalties are torn between his heritage and a woman who could destroy everything he’s ever believed in.

He leaned toward her. She didn’t flinch as a slave might have done nor lower her gaze as he might expect from a Roman woman. “I wish you to tell me what the matter is.”

A blush swept over her aristocratic cheekbones, but it wasn’t from modesty. It was mortification. “Why? Do you also own my thoughts?”

Realization punched through his chest. She knew. Who the fuck had told her? Rage thundered through his brain. It didn’t matter who had told her. The damage had been done. Now he had to defuse it.

“I have no desire to own your thoughts.”

“Only my body.” The derision in her voice slammed into him as if she had physically attacked him.

“That’s not true.” But if anyone saw her now, naked and on her knees before her master, what else would they think?

Except he wanted more than simply her willing body. He wanted her irreverent responses, no matter how shocking he sometimes found them.

I love this snippet cause it shows her plight, as a slave, her spunk and his honor.  He's more than a roman warrior. He's truly an honorable man.
